BITE - Behavioural Insights and Interventions to Target Excessive Plate Waste

Duration: October 2025 – March 2027
Funding: ~ €110 thousand
The BITE project aims to reduce consumer plate waste in workplace canteens by understanding and addressing the behaviours that lead to high-waste plates. Through a partnership with Google Ireland, we will conduct both qualitative and quantitative research to uncover the drivers of such waste, generating new behavioral insights to design, test, and implement evidence-based behaviour change interventions to be implemented and piloted in partnership at the Google campus in Dublin, which serves over 3,000 different customers on the average day across various food service outlets. Through the dissemination of research findings and the creation of a Practical Guide targeted at Food Service professionals, the project will contribute to achieving EU and global food waste reduction targets.

Behavior Science for Nature Conservation in Germany

Duration: November 2025 – November 2028
Funding: ~ €325 thousand
This project seeks to strengthen behavior change capacity in nature conservation, biodiversity protection and ESD in Germany. The project will establish a project advisory group to advance BCD within Germany. Practitioner capacity will be built through a translated online course and interactive virtual trainings. Through running an open call, we will identify three projects who will benefit from coaching and financial support to drive behavior change for nature conservation, generating evidence on the practical application of BCD within the German context. The project will support knowledge exchange through hosting a learning event, and developing three German-language case studies and reports.

Atong Tañon - Unlocking Effective Management of the Philippines' largest Marine Protected Area

Duration: November 2025 – October 2030
Funding: ~ € 4 million
Spanning 5,358.93 km², the Tañon Strait Protected Seascape (TSPS) is the Philippines' largest Marine Protected Area (MPA). However, its globally significant ecosystem is under pressure from human exploitation and climate change. Despite its status as an IUCN category V MPA, effective management and protection of the TSPS are considered to be weak, due to various constraints. As a result, fisher families face declining fish catch and deteriorating livelihoods. Rare, in partnership with the Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, is working to enhance the effective and inclusive management of the TSPS by addressing key challenges related to governance and regulations, technical capacity, enforcement, sustainable financing, as well as community participation and livelihood opportunities.
